Rarer is deeper. But why?

Correctness gets an answer into contention. Rarity makes its score different from another correct answer.

Rarity is assigned by prompt

The creator’s FAQ describes more than one way to assess familiarity. Some answer sets can be evaluated against a database of how often a name or word appears in writing. Others need additional assistance and editorial checking. This means there is no single public percentage rule that we can apply to every category.

Do not assume the score is calculated only from the answers typed by the people playing today. The published explanation refers to curated data and familiarity methods. It does not publish a complete scoring algorithm, an exhaustive tier boundary table, or a guaranteed score for an arbitrary answer.

Why the Krillion pick can surprise you

The creator says the special Krillion choice also takes the satisfaction of finding it into account. A deeply obscure item is not automatically the selected gem. At the far end of a list, the distinction between rare candidates becomes less useful than choosing something a few players might meaningfully recognise.

That explains why “I found an even more obscure example” does not by itself prove the chosen gem is wrong. It is also why we avoid publishing invented rankings for answers we have not seen the official game score.

From points to metres

The official Daily Dive instructions state that each point adds 10 metres. They put the trench at a 700-point total. Our calculator applies that published arithmetic; it does not judge answers, predict rarity or reproduce the game.

Depth in metres = total points × 10

Arithmetic examples: 250 points → 2,500 m; 500 points → 5,000 m; 700 points → 7,000 m. These are calculations, not player records.

Accepted, rare and missing are different questions

An accepted answer can still be common. A reasonable answer can be absent from the curated set. A misspelling can also map to an unexpected alias. Check the displayed accepted answer before interpreting the score as a verdict on your knowledge.

For an apparent curation mistake, keep the exact prompt, your exact entry, the mode and any result the game displayed. The answer troubleshooting guide explains how to separate a missing entry from an autocorrect match.
